SMALLEY, a chapelry in the parish of MORLEY, hundred of MORLESTON-and-LITCHURCH, county of DERBY, 7 miles (N. E.) from Derby, containing 727 inhabitants. The chapel is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. John and Samuel Richardson, in 1712, conveyed certain property to trustees, for the erection and: support of a school for twelve poor boys, each to receive eightpence per week; the present annual income is £ 88, and twenty-eight boys are educated, viz., fourteen from this chapelry, eight from Heanor, and six. from Horsely-Woodhouse. There are extensive collieries in the neighbourhood.
