SOFTLEY, a township, joint with Lynesack, in that part of the parish of ST-ANDREW-AUCKLAND which is in the north-western division of DARLINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 8 miles (S. S. E.) from Walsingham. The population is returned with Lynesack. This township, which is commonly called South Side, is bounded on the south by the river Gaunless, and contains several coal-works.
