SOMPTING, a parish in the hundred of BRIGHTFORD, rape of BRAMBER, county of SUSSEX, 2 miles (E. N. E.) from Worthing, containing 472 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £8. 7- E. Barker, Esq. was patron in 1815. The church is a cruciform structure, principally in the early English style, with a curious tower at the west end, apparently of more ancient date: it has lately received an addition of one hundred and fourteen sittings, of which eighty-eight are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £70 towards defraying the expense.
