SOULBY, a chapelry in the parish of KIRKBY-STEPHEN, EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 2miles (N. W.) from Kirkby-Stephen, containing 251 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £ 200 private benefaction, and £ 200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Rev. Sir C. J. Musgrave, Bart. The chapel was erected in 1663, at the expense of Sir Philip Musgrave, Bart. Soulby is a considerable village, situated on the river Eden, which is here crossed by a bridge of three arches, erected in 1819. Two fairs for cattle and sheep are held on the Tuesday before Easter, and August 30th; they are of recent establishment, and well attended. Three poor boys are educated for a trifling annuity, the gift of several individuals since 1768.
