SOUTHWICK, a township in the parish of MONKWEARMOUTH, eastern division of CHESTER ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 1 mile (N.W. by W.) from Sunderland, containing 1004 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. On the banks of the Wear, in this township, are several limekilns, ship-yards, and earthernware and glass manufactories. Human bones, and sometimes entire skeletons, have been found on removing the soil above the limestone quarries on Southwick hills.
