SOUTHWICK, a parish in the hundred of FISHERGATE, rape of BRAMBER, county of SUSSEX, l mile (E.) from New Shoreham, containing 374 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £9..13. 9., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is principally in the Norman style, though the upper story of the tower and some smaller portions are of later date. John Gray, in 1751, left a small sum towards the support of a school.
