SOWERBY (CASTLE), a parish in LEATH ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 3 miles (S. E. by E.) from Hesket-Newmarket, containing, with the townships of Bustabeck, How-bound, Row-bound, Southernby-bound, and Stocklewath-bound, 1012 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at £ 17.10. 5., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. The church is dedicated to St. Kentigern. At Birksceugh are the remains of a chapel, formerly called Lady chapel; and in the township of How-bound is Castle Hill, the site of an ancient castle, from which the parish derives its distinguishing prefix. Four poor children are instructed for a rent-charge of £5, the bequest of John Sowerby, in 1783.
