SPEENHAMLAND, a hamlet in that part of the
parish of SPEEN which is in the hundred of FAIRCROSS,
county of BERKS, adjoining the town of Newbury, containing
818 inhabitants. An almshouse was founded
here, in 1664, by Mrs. Anne Watts, for two poor;widows,
with an allowance of two shillings each per week.
