STAINLAND, a township in the parish of HALIFAX,
wapentake of MORLEY, West riding of the county of
YORK, 4 miles (S. by W.) from Halifax, containing
2814 inhabitants, who are extensively employed in the
manufacture of worsted, woollen cloth, cotton, and paper.
There is a place of worship for Independents. Various
Roman coins have been found in the neighbourhood.
