STAMBORNE, a parish in the hundred of HINCKFORD, county of ESSEX, 5 miles (N. W. by W.) from Castle-Hedingham, containing 432 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £15, and in the patronage of the King, as Duke of Lancaster. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. There is a place of worship for Independents. A school is supported by annual subscription. Seal and Arms.
