STANDLINCH, a parish in the hundred of DOWNTON, county of WILTS, 4 miles (S. E. by S.) from Salisbury, containing 42 inhabitants. It is bounded on the west and south-west by the river Avon. A chantry was founded here by. Queen Elfrida, in expiation of the. murder of Edward the Martyr, on the site of which a small chapel was erected in 1147, and rebuilt in 1677; but, though still in existence, no living is attached to it, nor is it used for divine service, except occasionally by the family of the lord of the manor, Earl Nelson, of Trafalgar House.
