STANNEY (GREAT), a township in the parish of
STOKE, higher division of the hundred of WIRRAL,
county palatine of CHESTER, 6 miles (N.) from Chester,
containing 18 inhabitants. The Chester canal
passes through this township, A court leet is occasionally
held. Excellent marl, composed of alluvial
matter, abounds here, and large trees have been dug
up in the meadows.
