STANTON(ST-JOHN'S), a parish in the hundred of BULLINGTON, county of OXFORD, 4 miles (N. E. by E.) from Oxford, containing 468 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, rated in the king's books at £ 16. 9. 4., and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Lady Elizabeth Holford, in 1717, gave £500 in support of a charity school for the children of this parish and that of Forest Hill: this bequest, having accumulated to £1550 Old South Sea annuities, produces an annual dividend of about £46. 10., which is applied for teaching fifty children, in a school-house erected in 1767.
