STANTON-PRIOR, a parish in the hundred of KEYNSHAM, county of SOMERSET, 5 miles (W. S. W.) from Bath, containing 158 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Bath, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £10. 1. 10., and in the patronage of W. G. Langton, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence. On a long isolated eminence, called Stanton Bury, are the remains of an ancient intrenchment, enclosing more than thirty acres; it has been thought a work of the Romans, some of their coins having been found near it j but being situated on the Wansdyke, it had probably a more remote origin, and might have been subsequently occupied by them. Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury, was born here, in 1598; he died in 1677.
