STAPLEGROVE, a parish in the hundred of TAUNTON-and-TAUNTON-DEAN, county of SOMERSET, 1 mile (N. W.) from Taunton, containing 403 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells, and in the patronage of Vincent Stuckey, Esq. It was separated from Taunton, and made a distinct parish, in 1554. The church has lately received an addition of one hundred, sittings, of which sixty are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £30 towards defraying the expense. A gift of land, producing a trifling sum, is applied for teaching poor children.
