STONERAISE, a township, joint with Brocklebank, in the parish of WESTWARD, ALLERDALE ward below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (s. S. E.) from Wigton. The population is returned with Brocklebank. In this township are the ruins of Old Carlisle, where was a considerable Roman city, supposed by Horsley to have been the Olenacum of the Notitia. The site is an oblong square, including an area of one hun.-, dred and seventy, by one hundred and twenty, yards, and was defended by a double vallum, with an entrance on each side. Both within and without the vallum foundations of numerous dwellings are discernible, and a very great number of altars, statues, coins, and inscriptions, has been found. The Roman road from Carlisle (Lugooallum) to Ellenborough (Volantium or Firosidum) passed by this station, and there are traces of various intrenchments in the vicinity.
