STOWEY, a parish in the hundred of CHEW, county of SOMERSET, 3 miles (S. S. W.) from Pensford, containing 208 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Bath, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £6. 12., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Richard Jones, in 1688, bequeathed £3000 for teaching and apprenticing poor children of Stowey and Chew.
