STURTON, a township, joint with Bransby, in the parish of STOW, wapentake of WELL, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 8 miles (S. E.) from Gainsborough, containing 268 inhabitants. It is within the peculiar jurisdiction of the Prebendary of Stow in Lindsey in the Cathedral Church of Lincoln. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The Countess Dowager of Warwick, in 1626, gave an annuity of £5 for teach ing poor children; and Edward Burgh subsequently bequeathed property, producing about £7 per annum, for a like purpose.
