STURTON, a parish in the North-clay division ,of the wapentake of BASSETLAW, county of NOTTINGHAM, 6 miles (E. N. E.) from East Retford, containing 605 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £5. 7. 3., endowed with £600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of York. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The Roman road from Lincoln to Doncaster passes through the parish, and the river Trent forms its southern boundary. A National school, erected in 1830, is partly supported by a rental of £6. 14., the gift of George Green, in 1710, for teaching eight poor children. Several coins were lately discovered here, and among them one of Louis XIII., and a leaden seal of Pope Innocent III.
