SUTTON-at-HONE, a parish in the hundred of AXTON-DARTFORD-and-WILMINGTON, lathe of SUTTON at HONE, county of KENT, 2 miles (S. by E.) from Dartford, containing 863 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese, of Rochester, rated in the king's books at £ 10, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is a spacious structure, principally in the decorated style. This extensive parish anciently gave name to the lathe; it is intersected by the river Darent, on the banks of which is the village, in a pleasing situation. Sutton Place, or St. John's, is an ancient brick structure, formerly belonging to the knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who had a commandery here. Dr. Pitcairn, the eminent physician, resided at Hextable, in this parish.
