TACKLEY, a parish in the hundred of WOOTTON, county of OXFORD, 3 miles (N.E.) from Woodstock, containing 478 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, rated in the king's books at £19. 9. 4., and in the patronage of the President and Fellows of St. John's College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is an ancient cruciform structure, but the north aisle appears to have been destroyed by fire. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists. Earth of a peculiar quality, used for flooring barns, cottages, &c., abounds here. The Roman Akeman-street passes through the parish, and separates the two manors of the Duke of Marlborough and Sir Henry Dashwood, Bart.: on that of the latter the two gateways of the ancient mansion built by the Harborne family still remain.
