TACOLNESTON, a parish in the hundred of DEPWADE, county of NORFOLK, 4 miles (N.W by W.) from St. Mary Stratton, containing 416 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Norfolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £19 and in the patronage of Mrs. Warren. The church is dedicated to All Saints. John Tasephans, who was prior of the Carmelite friary at Norwich, was bom here in 1404: he was a learned and pious divine, and a powerful orator, but his intolerant zeal brought much persecution upon the Lollards. The hall, a fine brick mansion, is a good specimen of the domestic style of architecture prevalent in the seventeenth century; it is said to have been built, in 1670, by the Browne family, who then held the estate.
