TAPLOW, a parish in the hundred of BURNHAM, county of BUCKINGHAM, 1 mile (E. N. E.) from Maidenhead, containing 586 inhabitants. The living is a rec tory, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £11. 18, 9., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas; in the chancel lie the remains of Sarah Milton, the mother of the immortal poet, who resided here for some years. Ann Taplow, in 1?S4> left £1. 10. per annum toward the instruction of the poor. On the river Thames, which separates this parish from Berkshire, is a large paper-mill, employing a considerable number of persons. . Cleifden, in this parish, was the residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales, during the infancy of their son, George III. It formerly belonged to a member of the Hamilton family, who fought under the celebrated Duke of Marlborough, and who, on his return from the continent, indulged the curious fancy of figuring, the battle of Blenheim, b'y plantations of trees, now in full vigour.
