TEFFONT-EVIAS, a parish in the hundred of DUNWORTH, county of WILTS, 6 miles (W.) from Wilton, containing 147 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, inthe archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £8, and in the patronage of the Rev. John Thomas Mayne. The church has been lately re- Trailt, on which occasion it received an addition of one hundred free sittings, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £100 towards defraying the expense. The river Nadder, and a beautifully clear stream, which rises near the adjoining village of Teffont-Magna, run through the parish the latter forms a lake, covering two acres, well stocked with trout. There is a fine freestone quarry, now being worked, besides very extensive excavations, from which the stone used in building Salisbury cathedral was taken. The manor-house, a handsome structure in the later style of English architecture, was the birthplace of Henry, Earl of Marlborough, Lord High Treasurer and Chancellor of England in the time Of James II.
