THORNES, a township in the parish of WAKEFIELD,
lower division of the wapentake of AGBRIGG,
West riding of the county of YORK, 1 mile (S. by W.)
from Wakefield. The population is returned with the
chapelry of Alverthorpe. A grant has recently been
made towards erecting a chapel, by the commissioners
appointed under the late act for promoting
the building of additional churches, &c., of which the
Vicar of Wakefield is to be the patron.
