THORNEY, a parish in the northern division of the wapentake of NEWARK, county of NOTTINGHAM, 8 miles (E. by N.) from Tuxford, containing, with the hamlets of Broadholme and Wiggesley, 264 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £4. 7. 6., endowed with £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Nevile George Nevile, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Helen. The Fosse-Dyke canal borders on the parish.
