THORNGRAFTON, a township in the parish of HALTWHISTLE, western division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 5 miles (E. by N.) from Haltwhistle, containing 247 inhabitants. House Steads, in this township, was the site of the Roman station Borcovicus, adjacent to which passed the Roman wall. It stands on the brow of a, rocky eminence, on the western declivity of which are several terraces, one above another. The area of this fort, on the north side, is level, but on the south it exhibits vast and confused heaps of ruins. In the neighbourhood are foundations of houses and traces o'f streets, squares, baths, &c., extending over several acres, and to the distance of two miles and a half; and on Chapel hill, a little to the south, are the remains of a temple of the Doric order, among which have been found altars, sepulchral inscriptions, and curiously carved figures in relief.
