THORNTON, a township in the parish of POULTON, hundred of AMOUNDERNESS, county palatine of LANCASTER, 1 mile (N. by E.) from Poulton, containing 875 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. James Baines, in 1717., bequeathed land, now producing an annual income of £31. 10., for teaching poor children of both sexes. The school-room has been lately rebuilt by subscription, and there is a house for the master, who instructs from one hundred to one hundred and fifty children on the National system.
