THORNTON, a parish in the southern division of
the wapentake of GARTREE, parts of LINDSEY, county
of LINCOLN, 1 mile (S.W.) from Horncastle, containing
153 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage,
in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the
king's books at £5. 12. 1., and in the patronage of the
Dean and Chapter of Lichfield. The church is dedicated
to St. Wilfrid.
