THORPE, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of NEWARK, county of NOTTINGHAM, 3 miles (S. W.) from Newark, containing 96 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £ 8, and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence, exhibits portions in the several styles of English architecture. The Trent bounds the parish on the north-west, and the old Fosse road passes between that river and the village, A fine, tesselated pavement, coins, and many other Roman relics, have been discovered in the neighbourhood.
