THOYDON (MOUNT), a parish in the hundred of ONGAR, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (S. E.) from Epping, containing 245 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Tawney-Stapleford, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £13. 6. 8. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, contains several fine monuments of the family of Smith, among which is one to the memory of Sir Thomas Smith, Chancellor of the Garter and Principal Secretary of State, in the reigns of Edward VI. and Elizabeth; opposite this is one to Sir William Smith and his lady, with their three sons and four daughters.
