THROWLEY, a parish in the hundred of FAVERSHAM, lathe of SCRAY, county of KENT, 4 miles (S. S.W.) from Faversham, containing 607 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury, rated in the king's books at £7.11. 8., and in the patronage of the Prebendary of Rugmere in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul's, London. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Sir Thomas Sondes, in 1592, endowed a free school for educating fourteen boys. There are also three almshouses, founded by the same family. The vicarage-house occupies the site of a priory, founded as a cell to the abbey of St. Bertin, at St. Omers in Artois, and granted, in the 22nd of Henry VI., to the abbey of Sion.
