THURSBY, a parish in the ward and county of CUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of Crofton- Quarter, Parton, and HighThursby, and containing 515 inhabitants, of which number, 355 are in the township of High Thursby, 6 miles (S. "W.) from Carlisle. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the Icing's books at £11. 10. 5., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £300" parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. A school, founded in 1740 by subscription, was endowed, in 1798, by Thomas Tomlinson, Esq., with £354, producing to the master a salary of £17. 14., for which ten children are educated. Thursby, it is thought, derived its name from Thor, the Saxon deity, to whose honour a temple is said to have been erected atWoodrigs, in this neighbourhood.
