TONGE, a township in the parish of OLDHAM-cum-PRESTWICH,
hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of
LANCASTER, 1 mile (B. by S.) from Middleton, containing
1390 inhabitants. This township adjoins Middle-,
ton, and forms a populous part of the environs of that
town. In 1829, a grant was proposed for building a,
chapel, by the Incorporated Society for promoting the
erection of additional, churches and chapels.
