TOOTING (UPPER), a hamlet in the parish of STREATHAM, eastern division of the hundred of BRIXTON, county of SURREY, 7 miles (S. S.W.) from London. The population is returned with the parish. This village, which is also designated Tooting-Beck, is situated between two hills. On the road between Tooting and Balham Hill is a chapel of ease to the parish church, erected by the inhabitants of Upper and Lower Tooting, at the expense of nearly £7000; it has been licensed by the Bishop of Winchester, and will accommodate about a thousand persons; over the altar is a painted window; the minister, who must be at least master of arts, is returned by the committee to the ordinary, who, out of three candidates so qualified, elects one. Two school-houses, with houses for the master and mistress, have been, erected by subscription, in which eighty boys and sixty girls receive a gratuitous education: they are supported by voluntary contributions.
