TOPPESFIELD, a parish in the hundred of HINCKFORD, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (W. N. W.) from Castle- Hedingham, containing 928 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in. the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £26, and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, contains some curious ancient monuments. Robert Edwards, in 1730, left £10 per annum for teaching children.
