TROWELL, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of BROXTOW, county of NOTTINGHAM, 5 miles (W.) from Nottingham, containing 464 inhabit- ants. The living is a rectory in two portions, each rated in the king's books at £4. 14. 4., in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York; the first portion is endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and both are in the patronage of Lord Middleton. The church is dedicated to St. Helen. The Nottingham canal passes through the parish, which is separated from Derbyshire by the river Erewash. There are coal mines in the neighbourhood.
