TWYFORD, a parish in the hundred of FAWLEY, Fawley division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 3 miles (S.) from Winchester, containing 1048 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Owslebury annexed, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Incumbent, rated in the king's books at £12. 12. Sf., and in the patronage of Lady Mildmay, on the nomination of the Master and Fellows of Emanuel College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Itchen navigation passes through the parish. A court baron is held annually. Twyford is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount. Twenty-four poor children are educated for the proceeds of £500, bequeathed by Richard Wooll, in 1780. Here was formerly a Roman Catholic seminary, in which the celebrated poet, Alexander Pope, received part of his education.
