UGBOROUGH, a parish in the hundred of ERMINGTON, county of DEVON, 3 miles (N. N. E.) from Modbury, containing 1429 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £20, endowed with £400 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Master and Wardens of the Grocers' Company. The church contains a Norman font and some remains of ancient screen-work. There was formerly a chapel at Earlscomb. A fair for cattle is held on the third Tuesday in every month. Sir John Kempthorn, a distinguished admiral, was born at Widescomb, in this parish, in 1620.
