UPHAM, a parish in that part of the hundred of BISHOP'S-WALTHAM which is in the Portsdown division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 2 miles (N. W. by N.) from Bishop's Waltham, containing 493 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Incumbent, rated in the lung's books at £11. 2. 1., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. Upham is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester, for the recovery of debts to any amount. Dr. Edward Young, author of the "Night Thoughts," whose father was rector of this parish, was born here in 1681; he died in 1707.
