UPHILL, a parish in the hundred of WINTERSTOKE, county of SOMERSET, 8 miles (N. W. by W.) from Axbridge, containing 270 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £11. 7., and in the patronage of John Fisher, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, has a central tower, and occupies the summit of a lofty eminence south of the village. There is a place of worship for Baptists. The river Ax bounds the parish on the south, and falls into the Bristol channel at the village, the proximity of which to Weston-Super-Mare (of late become a fashionable bathing place) has induced capitalists to purchase a considerable portion of land in the neighbourhood, with a view to erect houses upon it. Fuel is very abundant and cheap here. A cave was discovered a few years ago, similar to those in the same ridge of hills at Burrington and Banwell.
