WANLIP, a parish in the western division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER, 3 miles (S. E. by S.) from Mountsorrel, containing 128 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £ 14. 4. 4., and in the patronage of Sir Charles Thomas Palmer, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. The river Soar, or the Leicester and Melton-Mowbray navigation, runs through the parish, and is crossed by a bridge. Near the old Fosse road, which also passes in the vicinity, a Roman tesselated pavement, coins, broken urns, and other relics, have been found. Wanlip is in the honour of Tutbury, duchv of Lancaster, and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of debts under 40s.
