WEARMOUTH-SHORE (MONK), a township on the northern bank of the river Wear, adjoining the town of Sunderland, in the parish of MONKWEARMOUTH, eastern division of CHESTER ward, county palatine of DURHAM, containing 4924 inhabitants. This place is comparatively of modern origin, having risen in consequence of the extensive yards for ship-building which, during the late continental war, were here constructed, and from the increased commerce of the port of Sunderland.
