WHATLEY, a parish in the hundred of FROME, county of SOMERSET, 2 miles (W. by S.) from Frome, containing 354 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £12. 17- 1., and in the patronage of T. S. Homer, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. George, has a spire steeple; it is situated on an eminence separated from the parish of. Mells by a deep ravine, the sides of which are clothed with thick woods, and at the bottom runs a small rivulet. The parish abounds with freestone, under which is limestone rock to a considerable depth: in the former are embedded fossil shells, which are also found in great abundance over the entire surface. On a bold height, at the western extremity of the parish, are vestiges of a Roman encampment.
