WHITCHESTER, a township in that part of the
parish of HEDDON-on-the-WALL which is in the
eastern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND,
9 miles (W. N. W.) from Newcastle upon
Tyne, containing 57 inhabitants. Here was the site of
a Roman station, defended on almost every side by deep
ravines.
