WIDWORTHY, a parish in the hundred of COLYTON,
county of DEVON, 8 miles (E. by S.) from Honiton,
containing 274 inhabitants. The living is a rectory,
in the archdegcDnry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the
king's books at £11. 16. 0., and in the patronage of
J. T. B. Marwood, Esq. The church, dedicated to St.
Cuthbert, contains the effigy of a knight in armour,
and a fine monument, by Bacon, to the memory of
James Marwood, Esq., a liberal benefactor to the parish.
Near it is an old earthwork, and in the north-east part
of the parish are vestiges of an ancient intrenchment.
Benedictus Marwood, Esq., in 1742, gave £100, and
the Rev. Joseph Somaster, in 1770, left £50, to be applied
for the education of poor children. At Wilmington,
in this parish, a fair is held on the morrow of the
festival of St. Matthew.
