WIELD, a parish in the hundred of FAWLEY, Fawley
division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 6 miles (W.)
from Alton, containing 222 inhabitants. The living is
a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese
of Winchester, endowed with £400 royal bounty, and
in the patronage of the Earl of Portsmouth. The
church is dedicated to St. James. Wield is within the
jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester
every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any
amount.
