WIGGENHALL (ST-MARY-MAGDALENE), a
parish in the Marshland division of the hundred of FREEBRIDGE,
county of NORFOLK, 6 miles (S. S. Wk) from
Lynn-Regis, containing 551 inhabitants. The living is
a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese
of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £5.. 15. 10.
Mrs. Garforth was patroness in 1811. The church is
a regular structure, with a square stone tower at the
west end, and chapels at the terminations of the
north and south aisles; various parts of the building
are ornamented with the arms of Kervile, Scales, Berney,
and several other ancient families. On the west
bank of the Ouse was a hermitage, dedicated to St.
John the Evangelist, which in 1181 was appropriated,
by the prior and convent of Reynham, to nuns of the
order of St. Augustine, subject to Castle-Acre, whose
revenue at the dissolution was valued at £31. 16. 7.
