WINSCOMBE, a parish in the hundred of WINTERSTOKE, county of SOMERSET, 2 miles (N. by W.) from Axbridge, containing 1428 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £16. 2. 11., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Wells. The church, dedicated to St. Jam as, is a handsome structure, with a stately western tower crowned with pinnacles. Symons Cardinbrook, in 1761, gave the residue of his estate to be applied for teaching poor children: the school-room was erected by subscription, aided by about £60 from this bequest; the permanent annual income is £15.
