WINTON, a township in the parish of KIRKBY-STEPHEN, EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 1 mile (N. N. E.) from Kirkby-Stephen, containing 284 inhabitants. A free school, erected by subscription in 1659, is endowed with about £ 15 a year, 11 of which arises from land bequeathed, in 1681, by Robert Waller, and the rest from £112 left by Richard Munkhouse, in 1722; it is open to all children of the township, who pay a small quarterage. John Langhorne, D.D., joint translator of Plutarch, author of " Fables of Flora," and other works; his brother, William Langhorae, M.A., his assistant in the above translation; and Richard Burn, L.L.D., the eminent law-writer and historian, were natives of this place, and received the rudiments of their education at the school.
